Continuing Education - Act 48 and Act 45

Individuals holding a certification issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are required to complete continuing education requirements. Compliance with these requirements is the responsibility of the individual. Please be aware of all applicable requirements and deadlines. The District does not track this information on your behalf.

Act 48 Requirements:

Act 48 of 1999 requires all Pennsylvania educators holding a Pennsylvania public school certification (including Instructional I and II, Educational Specialist I and II, Administrative, Supervisory, Letters of Eligibility, and all vocational certificates) to participate in ongoing professional education. Educators must complete six (6) collegiate credits, PDE-approved continuing professional education courses, or 180 hours of continuing professional education programs or activities through a PDE-approved provider.

Important Note: Act 48 hour requirements begin upon issuance of the certification—not when an individual begins teaching under that certification.

Act 45/PIL Requirements:

Continuing education is required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for certificated staff serving in the following positions:

Principal
Assistant or Vice Principal
Superintendent
Assistant Superintendent
Intermediate Unit Executive Director
Intermediate Unit Assistant Executive Director
Director of an Area Career and Technical Education School
