After struggling with mechanical problems in early qualifying matches, the team was able to make the playoffs and went on to win it. They were excited to be playing in the finals where they knew they would be going up against some of the top teams in the world from 12 countries. After a round robin finals tournament, the team finished with a 2-1-2 record and finished as World Championship Semi-Finalists. Head Coach Kevin McKay explained, “For those not all the way up to speed on the complex world of FIRST, but if you follow college basketball: We won our conference tournament (District Championship, April 6), got a bid to the NCAA Tournament (World Championships), and made the final four (Division Championships), and only narrowly missed the final 2!”
“It was amazing to attend World Championships and see all the effort everyone put in over the season pay off,” said freshman, Adriana Presiado. “Going to Detroit and seeing all the other teams there from around the world was an experience I will never forget.”
Although their competition season is over, the Fightin’ Robotic Owls will be hard at work planning for their free summer camp, which provides students in grades 7-9 with hands on experience designing, building and programming robots, as well as experience with CADD and manufacturing.
