On Tuesday, June 3, Cornwells Elementary School 5th grade students participated in a special Tree Planting event. Cornwells was selected as a winner in the Phillies 2024 Home Runs for Trees contest held this past September, presented by Asplundh.
Cornwells parent, Courtney Gross, mother of Ariana Jacoby, submitted a fabulous essay nominating Cornwells, and her submission was selected as a finalist.
Mrs. Gross’ submission included a detailed paragraph on: Improving Air Quality and Reducing Pollution; Providing Shade and Reducing Heat Island Effect; Enhancing Students' Mental and Physical Health; Supporting Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health; Fostering Environmental Stewardship and Education; and Enhancing the Aesthetic Appeal of the School Grounds.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Bensalem Grounds Coordinator, Mark Fankhouser selected 10 trees (5 different species: 2 White Oak; 2 American Hornbean; 2 Kentucky Coffee; 2 Hackberry; and 2 Yellowwood) for the grounds at Cornwells.
Special thanks to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Northeast Tree Tenders, Bensalem grounds crew Luis and Jason, and the Cornwellians for preparing the ground for the trees.
