National Junior Honor Society For the fifth year (2014 - 2015), Shafer is sponsoring a branch of the National Junior Honor Society. In the fall, eighth grade students who had at least a 3.6 cumulative grade point average from seventh grade were invited to complete a student information form. These students already possessed the scholarship requirement. But prospective NJHS members are also required to demonstrate their involvement in the areas of leadership, citizenship, character and service.
A Faculty Council was established to review the profiles of each student and then decide who meets the criteria for membership. Once the selections are made, the first marking period report cards are checked for the 3.6 GPA. A formal induction ceremony will be held in the spring.
In previous years, our members participated in many school service activities. They all went on our TV studio and made speeches during Black History Month. In addition, our NJHS students indoctrinate new students to the building as they register throughout the school year. Teachers, parents and students themselves can request the assistance of an NJHS member for tutoring or organizational help. In the past, this has been done during our extended homeroom periods held Monday through Friday.
We are looking forward to another great year with our National Junior Honor Society.
