Robert K. Shafer Middle School educates seventh and eighth grade students. The school is based on middle school philosophy which emphasizes academic teams, a thematic approach to education and student exploration. The school is organized in a team approach and presently has two teams in place at each grade level. The seventh grade academic teams are The Road Runners and The Starbursts. The eighth grade academic teams are The Riptide and The Pirate Sharks. All four teams consist of two language arts literacy teachers as well as one teacher pertaining to each of the following content areas: mathematics, science, social studies, and a special education teacher.
In terms of teaming and the daily schedule each student follows a nine period schedule which includes two periods of language arts literacy, one period each of mathematics, science, social studies. The schedule also includes seventh and eighth grade wellness/fitness or computers, seventh grade decisions, eighth grade careers, one period of an exploratory cycle (art, foods and nutrition, digital photography or Pod casting, applied technologies, industrial technologies, or music appreciation), and one period of lunch. To further foster the success of the academic program, team teachers have a common team planning period each day during which they plan and coordinate thematic units, interdisciplinary instruction, student recognition programs, and support meetings involving the school counselors, administration, and parents/guardians. Ultimately, the team concept assists middle school students with establishing identity and a sense of family during preadolescence. We pride ourselves on being a school that excels in academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and social equity ensuring the success of every child.
